To Market To Market........

Welcome to Tanglewood Berry Farm
The only USDA Certified Organic Farm in Ft Wayne and the surrounding area

Thursday, August 9, 2012

They are calling for bad storms today so if that happens we will close the market today and open tomorrow!

Saturday May 19, 2012
We sure had a wonderfully busy day yesterday. We stayed open longer to accommodate the many late comer's. Thanks for all your support. We sold out of spinach and arugula pretty quick yesterday but we will have more next week. The strawberries are still coming on strong and we may have to open additional hours this week so look for our signs or check the blog for extended hours. We expect to have strawberries for about another two weeks (weather permitting) then we will go right into raspberry season. There may even be some overlap of strawberries and raspberries. God Bless our Berry Pickers!

Wow! As you know our berries (pictured below) are so fragrant.

 and red....and sweet!

For all you raspberry lovers; raspberries are coming soon. Here's a picture of our raspberries from last year. They are delicious!

Saturday May 12th
We will have plenty of our beautiful, sweet, red strawberries tomorrow so not to worry.
It looks like the arugula is almost ready so if not ready by Saturday it will be Tuesday. Spinach will be right behind the arugula. We also will be harvesting a variety of herbs any day.
We will be open 10am-2:00pm

National Lemonade Day is also Saturday May 12. So we will have free samples of strawberry lemonade at the market. My granddaughter Sophie will be helping with the lemonade.

Strawberry Jam
Well I have made 4 batches of my very popular, low sugar, Strawberry Jam. The berries are so sweet the jam tastes best low sugar. The jam will be available this Saturday.

Blackberry Tea Leaves
We will have a few jars to sell at Saturday's market. We cut back the young blackberry plants in early spring and dried the leaves. The young spring leaves make wonderful tea. All you do is pour boiling water over the leaves and steep for 5 minutes. Blackberry tea leaves are wonderful for many ailments and tastes great.

Mother's Day
Don't forget my Farm to Fork the Margy Way cookbook is specially priced at $20.00 for Mother's Day. This is the perfect time of year to give this book as a gift to your self or mom or the family chef:). There are so many wonderful family friendly fresh out of the garden recipes. Perfect in a gift basket with fresh strawberries, strawberry jam and blackberry tea leaves.

Saturday May 5th
Well, we made it through our first Saturday Farmer's Market with our Strawberries. Though the market open time was short it was Berry Sweet:). It was so nice to see our regular customers and nice to see we have a few new customers. We sold out selling 90 quarts in the first hour. Wow! We are expecting to have more strawberries to sell this Tuesday, May 8th from 2:00 pm until we sell out. I apologize to those who missed out Saturday. Strawberries start out slow in ripening then all of a sudden they come on like gang busters so not to worry we will have enough for all who enjoy our fresh, locally grown, USDA Certified Organic Strawberries.

Remember strawberries are on the dirty dozen list so if you can't buy everything organic I urge you to buy strawberries organic especially for your children and grandchildren.

Following are some of the questions I received Saturday from our market customers:

1) "how long will you have strawberries". We will have strawberries for about a month. Then the raspberries should be ready or close to ready.
2) " why are your strawberries so early"-We have an early variety, which last year we were two weeks earlier than other strawberry growers.
3) "how did your strawberries survive the frost"-When frost comes we delicately cover our berries.
4) "what are culls" -they are berries with imperfections that are still good just mostly have odd shapes. These are the berries Camille (my daughter who manages the farm) gives me to bake with. I also use them to make jams, smoothies and strawberry puree for strawberry lemonade. We sell these at a discount at the stand when available.
5) "why are your berries so sweet"-because we pick them when they are perfectly ripe
6) "what variety of USDA Certified Organic fruits and vegetables will you have this year"-beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, eggplant, kale, leeks, lettuce (a variety), muskmelons, watermelons, onions, peas, bell peppers and specialty peppers, chili's, radishes, spinach, summer squash (zucchini and yellow squash), a variety of winter squash, pumpkins, variety of tomatoes, red raspberries, golden raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, basil, chives, dill, marjoram, oregano, parsley, and rosemary.

Strawberry Recipes-I have posted a few of my favorite strawberry recipes -which are in my cookbook and listed below- so please take a minute to go to my recipe tab to see if there are any you may want to try.
  • Strawberry Cake (my personal favorite!). I made this last night and the berries are so sweet it tastes like I used strawberry jam in the recipe. I must say it is delicious!

Camille The Farm Manager
Camille has a Bachelors degree in plant science/horticulture from SUNY (State University New York.) While at SUNY Camille did an internship as a crop advisor. During this time she was an advisor to some pretty high profile upstate NY farms like the Rockefeller's, Julia Roberts, Robert De Niro, Martha Stewart and a few other celebrities. Camille had some nice job offers in NY but we are thrilled she came home to manage Tanglewood Berry Farm for us.

Margy the Market Master
I will be helping my daughter Camille this year with the farm and the market. I am very excited to do this. Camille will grow the food and I will prepare it. I will be happy to help with any cooking questions you may have so ask me anything when you come to the market or send me an e-mail.

In the meanwhile I will be updating the blog weekly and sending out weekly e-mails with market dates and times that we will be open. I will also add new recipes and pictures and updates of what's going on and where.

Tapestry 2012
As many of you know, Chef Matt from Eddie Merlot's and I did a presentation and cooking demonstration at Tapestry again this year. Our presentation sold out again at 305. Camille took the following pictures for us:

Cookbook: Farm to Fork the Margy Way
Because my cookbook has been so popular at the Farm Stand I will continue offering it at the special price of $20.00. I want everyone interested to be prepared for the Farm Season and armed with plenty of fresh, family friendly recipes. I will have my book available at the market every day we are open and would be happy to personalize it for you.
I have received very positive comments about my book. What I hear the most is: "it's a very family friendly, easy to use, a good everyday cookbook that has regular ingredients that I have at home". I am delighted to hear this as this was my goal.
For Margy's Cafe fan's, this book includes 500 recipes, many of which are from my former restaurant and cooking classes and 130 of the most popular recipes from my first book (which is out of print).
This book will guide you through the summer markets with instructions on how to select fresh produce, clean and store it and then a wonderful variety of recipes to cook it. What a wonderful  Wedding Gift or Bridal Shower gift!
Join me, June 29th on WBCL 90.3 The Christian Radio Station, Family-Friendly Commercial Free -June Kitchen Caboodle Show from 10:05-10:20am. I will be talking about my cookbook and recipe tips!

Enjoy!
